Whitewashing a Native History

Native American religions has taught me a variety of aspects of Native American culture and religion. That is not what sticks out the most in my mind though. What does, however, is how these people have been silenced and shut out of American culture and society today. From the very first day I began to realize just how much these people do not have a voice in our world today. The study of their religion from outside perspectives is the perfect example of just how disconnected and bias nonnative people are to Native American cultures and religious practices. America does not study Native Americans religions as a religion but more of an anthropological study of “savages”. Native American religious practices are very similar to every major religion in existence and yet is devalued in stereotypes and bias research. This type of mindset has devalued the Native beliefs and ultimately their credibility of having authentic religion and religious practices to the outside world. This is a huge fail not just on the researchers who do this very debauched research but as America as a whole. The United States has and continues to attempt to erase any culture, land, religion and livelihood the native people still have. Big corporations pollute native land or try and take it all together. Many reservations have a huge increase of cancers and health problems do to the amount of toxins big corporations near the reservations pump into the reservation’s water and soil supply. Where is the outcry? Where is the anger? The sad truth there is none. It is simply that America as a whole DOES NOT CARE! Now for example if this was happening in rich white neighborhoods the outrage would be immense and every major television network would be airing it all over the air waves. It’s very interesting that never have we heard of the horrible conditions and struggles the native people face on the reservations.  In the past, these people were murdered by the millions, had their culture, religion and land ripped away from them! We took away their land and moved them to a small little area and basically left them to fend for themselves. That doesn’t seem very American to me. Many of these reservations are full of poverty, drugs and violence. We don’t try ant fix it instead we tell them the reason they are in this situation is because they are not Christians (Juanita reasoning for why things are the way they are on the reservations, lovely!).Has it ever occurred to people that maybe the reason things are so bad is because we made it so bad for them? We took everything from these people and yet the common impression is they put themselves in that position! No, the white man did! The foundation of America was not about freedom and liberty! It was about killing off anyone who was not white or enslaving them and taking anything and everything nonwhites had for the white man themselves. The most disgusting part about all of that is then turn around and attempt to white wash all of history to make it look like the white man saved the Native Americans from themselves!   They have multiple nations in this nation and yet have no say on what happens to their nation (America). We have let Hollywood fill our imaginations with inaccurate accounts of what a Native American is! Watch any old western movie and the white cowboy is trying to save the town from a horde of insane bloodthirsty Native Americans! In America, we have done a huge disservice to the only original Americans! Tell me how that is just and acceptable?  How can we honestly say we are the good guys when we are attempting to erase an entire group of people from our own nation? When will America wake up and stand up to this injustice? Sadly, I doubt that day will ever come. We still to this day teach our small children Native Americans were so lucky the white man came and civilized them. We live in our own blissful ignorance where America can do no wrong. I fear for the day when children of the future have to ask who the Native Americans were.

Hello

Hello fellow bloggers, My name is Kevin Mays and a inspiring blogger. I'm using this as a creative outlet as well as a way to speak my mind and talk about things that matter to me! I'm currently an undergrad student inspiring to become a human rights attorney focusing on war crimes and international human rights. In religion, I'm borderline atheist with agnostic tendencies. My religious views constantly change and evolve the more I learn about the world around me. Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from you guys.

Arrested and Confused

Lately, all I’ve seen and heard everywhere is about police brutality, police departments becoming militarized, unarmed people (black and white) being shot dead, and racism. So I’ve decided to know take this time to give my opinion on all of this insane madness happening in our very own country. Take some time to comment on some of the tasteless, uninformed, or plain idiotic thoughts and ideologies I’ve had to listen to for months now. So first I want to say my heart goes out to all the families who have lost someone either cop or civilian. Today we just heard about two cops in New York who were tragically gunned down in their own police car. Whenever someone loses their life or a loved one it’s incredibly tragic and unfortunate. No matter who side of this situation you’re on it is tragic, it’s called human decency and empathy. Right now, we need that more than ever. I’d also like to take to say how much I do respect and thank law enforcement and the insane shit they have to deal with on the regular. I’d also like to show how much I respect PEACEFUL protesters. We live in America where we can peaceful protest our thoughts across and good job on exercising your freedom of speech peacefully. I’d like to first address the extremely ignorant things I’ve literally had to listen to for weeks!
1.       I hate cops! I’ve heard this way before all this madness started and still hear it today. No you don’t dumbass if it wasn’t for the police every night would be the movie The Purge. It totally annoys me when people say this. People say that now but when scary shit is going down the first people they call are the police. So let’s all just stop saying this. Instead, let’s say I hate bad cops.
2.       It’s only black people who riot. This lovely quote came from an old white lady in my religion class this semester. This comment goes to show you just how little knowledge and racist this women is. White people riot too! One of the more recent riots, was in a pumpkin festival in New Hampshire it ended in tear gas and a car flipped over. Not to mention all the times sports teams have won or lost. Seriously people!
3.       All cops are racist/bad. Another extremely dumb statement I’ve also heard. Not all cops are racist/bad the majority are good decent human beings just trying to do the right things in a crazy world.
4.       Well if black guys stopped dressing like thugs police will stop treating them like thugs.  It should not matter how someone dresses, who they hang out with, or what they are doing. What should matter and (the only thing that should matter) is if they are breaking the law! That’s it!

5.       Why don’t we ever talk about black on black violence, instead we talk about police on black violence? Excellent question why don’t we? Oh that’s right because we never do hear about it when someone does. NAACP is constantly working with black communities to reduce violence within violent and predominately black communities. The better question is why we (as in a society as a whole) are not talking about reducing violence everywhere. Secondly, there is a big difference between police beating/killing someone and civilians beating the crap out of each other/ killing one another. The difference being is cops are supposed to uphold the law and not act like some punk one the street gunning down or beating the crap out of someone who is unarmed/weaker than them. We pay police to protect us not shoot us down. This kind of brutality luckily is being caught on tape but still many times police are able to still get away with it.
